A good lawn is not about luck — it is about rhythm. Mowing frequency and height are the two decisions that determine whether grass grows into a dense carpet or thins out under moss. Here is the simple system we use on hundreds of properties across Harju County.
The golden rule: never cut more than a third
The most important rule in lawn care: a single mow should never remove more than one third of the grass height. If the lawn has grown to 9 cm and you want 6 cm, all is well. But if you let it reach 15 cm and cut it down to 5 cm in one go, the plant goes into stress: roots weaken, the lawn yellows and takes weeks to recover. This is why a regular schedule is both cheaper and better than rare rescue mows — overgrown grass also takes longer and costs more as a service.
A seasonal schedule for the Estonian climate
Spring mowing usually starts in late April or early May, once the grass has reached about 8–10 cm and daily temperatures stay above freezing. Spring is peak growth — mow once a week. In summer the frequency depends on the weather: up to twice a week in rainy periods, less often and higher in drought. In autumn growth slows and mowing every one to two weeks is enough. The last cut is done before lasting night frosts, in Harju County usually in the second half of October.
The right mowing height
For a normal home lawn, 4–6 cm works best. Cutting lower does not make the lawn prettier — it weakens roots, lets the sun dry the soil and opens the door to moss and weeds. In hot, dry spells raise the height by 1–2 cm: longer blades shade the roots and hold moisture. Never mow wet grass — the turf tears and the cut looks ragged.
The most common mistakes we see every week
The most frequent mistake is irregularity: no mowing for a month, then everything cut at once. The second is a dull blade that shreds the grass tips — the lawn yellows and disease spreads more easily. The third is always mowing in the same direction, which leaves permanent tracks. If mowing keeps slipping off your schedule, a regular service is often more affordable than it seems — ask us for a quote and we will keep the rhythm for you.
